Reasons to visit the Italian Lakes

The five main lakes of northern Italy each have a character of their own. They have been a tourist destination since Roman times and are still as popular as ever. Hardly surprising, given the pretty-as-a-picture scenery all along the shores, the watersport opportunities on the water and the huge backdrop of mountains behind.

Lake Maggiore is one of the biggest lakes, as it's name implies. The enchanting lake is made all the better by the enchanting islands which are dotted across it. No visit would be complete without a trip across to the Borromean Islands. Castles and villas, botanical gardens and nature reserves lend further charm to this magical location.

The characteristic Y-shape of Lake Como gives it a huge shoreline, and it is also the deepest lake in Italy, plunging to an amazing 1,345 feet (so diving to the bottom is out of the question!).

The mild climate and perfect water temperature in summer, make Lake Garda the ideal destination for walkers, cyclists, windsurfers, and just anyone who enjoys the outdoor life. Like the other bigger lakes, Garda is blessed with a cornucopia of beautiful historic buildings  and delightful towns and villages all along its shore.

Smaller lakes such a Ledro and Segrino have barely been touched by building over the years. Just the occasional village interrupts the mountain and lakeside scenery.
